Your Cheat Sheet To Google Display Ad Sizes

Google Ads are an effective way to target your ideal audience and grow your business. Google display ads reach over 90% of internet users worldwide across over 2 million websites and apps in the Google Display Network. Running Google display ads isn’t exactly a piece of cake, though. They require images in several different sizes for optimal results and outcomes, which can make it overwhelming to determine which is best. That’s why we’ve created a cheat sheet to help you decide which Google display ad sizes to use. Although it seems trivial, it’s an important step in running a successful Google Display campaign.

How Do Google Display ADs Grow Marketing Results for Advertisers?

As marketers, when creating ads we typically hone in on aspects like the creative elements, messaging, CTAs, performance metrics, etc. But the size of your Google display ad is equally important. The size can either maximize or limit its potential reach, which in turn impacts impressions, clicks, and conversions. If you choose the wrong size for your campaign, the reach will diminish. And if you’re trying to target a specific audience, this could make your ads ineffective altogether. Understanding which ad sizes serve the best results allows you to capture the maximum reach and viewable impressions with them.

What are the best image sizes for ads?

The most popular Google ad sizes for display advertising include:

Large mobile banner (320 x 100)

One of the top-performing Google ad sizes is the large mobile banner. Large mobile banners dispatch retargeting better than the bare mobile banner size. 92.1% of internet users access the internet using a mobile phone. So it’s safe to say that prominent mobile ad sizes like the large mobile banner help engage potential customers.

Half page (300 x 600)

Although half-page ads don’t take up half of the page, they perform very well and richly communicate information to readers. This may be because half-page ads take up a larger portion of the website than other ads. Due to its generous size, viewers have to look at them for a longer time, encouraging more clicks and engagement.

Large rectangle (336 x 280)

Another top-performing ad size are large rectangle ads. Large rectangle ads can help boost conversions and bring in revenue. When embedded in content, these get better reactions from viewers by combining visual and text components to boost your performance even more.

Medium rectangle (300 x 250)

Medium rectangle ads are some of the most successful Google retargeting ad sizes. They can appear on smartphones, tablets, and computers and display with text or at the bottom of pages, especially after articles. This popular ad format is considered one of the most effective (although perhaps the most expensive) to run.

Leaderboard (728 x 90)

Lastly, the leaderboard ad can appear in prime positions, like at the top of a website page, which leads to more clicks. The leaderboard ad size also operates well around forums.

Other Google Ad Display Sizes to Use:

  • Banner (468 x 60)
  • Half banner (234 x 60)
  • Mobile banner (320 x 50)
  • Square (250 x 250)
  • Small square (200 x 200)
  • Vertical banner (120 x 240)
  • Small rectangle (180 x 150)
  • Skyscraper (120 x 600)
  • Wide skyscraper (160 x 600)
  • Portrait (300 x 1050)
  • Billboard (970 x 250)
  • Large leaderboard (970 x 90)

Note that regardless of the ad type, Google only supports image files in 3 formats: JPG, PNG, and GIF. For the file size, no display banner should be more than 150KB, regardless of its dimension.

Which Google Display AD Size is Right For You?

The Google Display Network supports a variety of ad sizes. However, there’s no secret ad dimension guarantees success. We advise that you spend time creating assets around the most common and top-performing ad sizes. However, your campaign’s ultimate success will depend on many other factors, like your messaging, targeting, creative, and overall ad strategy.

Once your ads are live and seeing impressions and clicks, analyze what performs best and continuously test new campaigns. It will take some trial and error to decipher which ads are doing well and why. You may have to mix and match a certain headline, image, and display ad size to find the winning combination.

What About AD Design?

While Google ad size matters, design matters as well. Display ads should be visually striking, with carefully crafted text, the right mix of fonts, color, graphics, and maybe even animation. They are great for raising your brand awareness, and can be effective when used for remarketing purposes.
