How To Prioritize Your Day

Are you looking for how to prioritize your day?  Tired of letting the day own you instead of you owning the day?

Recently, I woke up feeling overwhelmed & lacked focus this morning. My mind was racing. I was thinking about all the things that need completion for the day. I started getting sucked into this mental quicksand of tasks and things that needed immediate attention (so I thought). Yikes!

Sound familiar?

Here’s what I did to control this runaway train. . . I slammed the brakes & focused on using the AIRS technique.

Instead of immediately working, perhaps frantically going through emails, and creating an overwhelming list of tasks that need completion. I just stopped dead in my tracks. Pulled out a piece of paper and a pen, and got to writing in my journal as I often do when I feel overwhelmed or under-prioritized.

Prioritize & Focus In 15 Minutes Or Less

  1. I acknowledged I was feeling overwhelmed
  2. I closed my eyes and counted 20 deep breaths
  3. I reflected on what I am grateful for in my life
  4. I wrote on a blank piece of paper today’s list of things to focus on:
    1. Must Do
    2. Should Do
    3. Like to Do

In less than 15 minutes I had clarity & focus on what I needed to accomplish for the day. I primed my mind to reflect on what matters both in life and in work.

I focused on the “Must Do’s” first and surprisingly got them done in just a few short hours. Then I attacked the “Should Do.” Finally, I had some fun doing the “Like to Do” items. Despite starting the morning feeling “in over my head,” I ended my day feeling accomplished and focused.

I have used this formula over the past few years with much success. My involvement with growth hacking for our clients can create an impressive amount of work that crosses a multitude of industries, all with client identities unique to their own. This type of workload requires time, research, strong organizational skills, forward-thinking, planning, and high levels of service that can consume days if not prioritized & focused.

How To Stay Focused At Work

I am often asked how I prioritize my day. How do I do lead, consult, create, make time for my family, and keep up on my health?

First, it’s not natural. It requires discipline and some self-actualization to catch these potential quicksand moments. However, over time, it gets easier to control the overwhelming moments instead of letting them control you.

The AIRS Technique To Improve Focus

It’s the ideal way to quickly prioritize when feeling overwhelmed because it’s a combination of methods rolled into one easy-to-use format. It’s a perfect solution for people who are feeling overwhelmed or de-prioritized.

  • Acknowledge – it’s cool if you feel overwhelmed. First, admit it.
  • Inhale – 20 deep breaths
  • Reflect – what are you grateful for and why?
  • Simplify – Must do, Should Do, Like to Do

It’s so simple for most of us to make tasks, projects, and other items to consume the day with no order. Believe it or not, pausing is the best investment of your time. It sounds counterproductive. But, stopping to regroup frees up time in your day and helps you prioritize what is most important.
